From Carnegie Mellon University Athletics
Carnegie Mellon University Director of Athletics, Physical
Education and Recreation Josh Centor has announced the promotion of
Head Volleyball Coach and Senior Woman Administrator (SWA) Kim
Kelly to Assistant Director of Athletics. Kelly will still retain
her duties as the Tartans volleyball coach as well as her
administrative duties and role as Senior Woman Administrator. She
will also assume added responsibilities with compliance education
and departmental strategic planning.
“Kim has been an integral part of our success over the past
nine years. In addition to her outstanding work with our
women’s volleyball program, she is an important leader within
our department,” said Centor. “Kim is an incredible
role model for our young men and women at Carnegie Mellon. She
brings passion and energy to everything she does, and I am thrilled
that she will assume this critical leadership position.”
Kelly has served as the departments SWA since 2008 and will begin
her 10th season coaching the volleyball team at the start of the
2014 season. During the 2013 season, Kelly won her 400th game
and led the team to its most wins (25) during her tenure. She
returned the Tartans to the NCAA tournament, the programs second
under her direction, and a third-place University Athletic
Association (UAA) finish.
In nine years at the helm, Kelly has led the Tartans to two NCAA
Championship appearances, two ECAC South Volleyball Championships
and three of the program's four third-place finishes in the highly
touted UAA.
“I have enjoyed my responsibilities outside of volleyball for
the past nine years and am excited about this opportunity,”
said Kelly. “I look forward to continuing the growth of
our department and helping us achieve new levels of
success.”
In addition to being the leader of the women’s volleyball
program, Kelly has been responsible for execution of
intercollegiate athletics contracts and scheduling, the departments
Brown Bag Lunch program and holds a significant role with the
planning of the Excellence Forum sessions as well as the Athletic
Banquet. This past fall, Kelly was appointed as one of the
university’s Deputy Title IX Coordinators.
Prior to Carnegie Mellon, Kelly was the head women’s
volleyball coach at Gettysburg College from 1996 through 2004.
During her tenure, the Bullets posted a 250-82 record, captured
eight Centennial Conference titles and appeared in eight NCAA
Division III Championship Tournaments. She was an assistant coach
at Gettysburg for four seasons before becoming head coach.
Kelly is a 1992 graduate of Gettysburg, where she was regarded as
one of the top setters ever to play for the Bullets. During her
four seasons (1988-91), she was credited with 2,079 assists, the
third-highest total in school history. Kelly earned a
bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Gettysburg and a
master’s of business administration from Mount St.
Mary’s University in 2003.
