Case Western Reserve University student-athletes took part in the school’s 12th Annual Case for Community Day on Friday, September 19. Spartan teams led more than 200 elementary school students in an on-campus sports clinic. The program was hosted by the Case Association of Student-Athletes (CASA).
“This sports clinic is one of our favorite events of the year,” said women's basketball senior and CASA President Brooke Orcutt (Morrison, Colo./Dakota Ridge). “We are lucky enough to play the sport we love as part of our college experience, and we enjoy getting to share our passion with the local youth in the community. It's our chance to give back to a community that has helped shape our experience here at CWRU.”
The afternoon event offered an opportunity for training and participation in a variety of activities at stations inside the Veale Center and outside on Van Horn Field. In addition, the Spartan men's basketball team took its service off campus by painting at the Hitchcock Center for Women.
“It's always a fun event, not only for the elementary school students visiting campus, but for the student-athletes able to interact with them for the day,” added volleyball junior and CASA President-Elect Katie Best (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny). “The kids are incredibly enthusiastic about visiting campus. They love playing sports with us and seeing what it's like to be a college student. It's a great feeling to be involved with an event that potentially shapes the futures for so many youngsters."
Now in their eighth year of existence, the clinics have become a staple of Case for Community Day. The event is just one of many ways that CWRU student-athletes volunteer and serve the community throughout the school year.
“CASA’s mission is to enhance the student-athlete experience by providing a variety of opportunities for our athletes and by promoting Case Western Reserve athletics,” said women’s soccer senior and Community Service Chair Cameron Casson (Allen, Texas/Allen). “One way we feel that this can be achieved is by giving back to our community. The sports clinic allows our student-athletes to pass on skills and their love for the game to the youth in Cleveland.”
