Washington University Athletics Celebrates Division III Week April 4-10

From Washington University Athletics

Washington University in St. Louis Athletics in conjunction with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will celebrate Division III Week Monday-Sunday, April 4-10.

Division III Week is an opportunity for all individuals associated with Division III to observe and celebrate the impact of athletics and student-athletes on the campus and surrounding community. Approximately 500 undergraduates at Washington University are student-athletes, all competing for the sports they love while balancing busy academic schedules, jobs and other commitments throughout the year.

Many student-athletes excel in the classroom, demonstrate outstanding leadership and are engaged in community service activities. WashU will join nearly 450 schools and conferences in celebrating these great accomplishments. To commemorate the week, SAAC will host numerous events to help raise the public profile of Division III institutions as places where student-athletes can follow their passions and develop their potential.

Tuesday (Social Media Day)
WashU Athletics wants to hear from student-athletes, coaches and administrators about why they chose Division III. Tweet at @washubears or Instagram @washubears with the hashtag #whyd3. Tell us your story in less than 140 characters or in a short video.

Wednesday – (D3 Awareness Day)
11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. – Tabling at the DUC – This is intended to help promote the DIII identity and engage the general student body. Student-Athletes will be tabling at the Danforth University Center (DUC) handing out factoids and information about DIII athletics to non-athletes and athletes alike. The goal is to foster a greater sense of DIII identity amongst the entire campus community.

11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. – T-Shirt Handout at DUC – T-shirts will be provided for students to wear throughout the week with the intention of promoting DIII Week programming. The hope is that these T-shirts will allow members of campus to identify student-athletes and invite them to engage in discussions about their DIII experience at WashU. There will be 200 t-shirts available on a first come, first serve basis.

There will also be a wiffle ball and strike zone set up outside the DUC. Participants will be entered into a drawing, with winners being announced on Saturday at the baseball game.

Thursday (Professor Appreciation Day)
This social media event is intended to promote the DIII identity and values amongst professors. It is an opportunity for student-athletes to tell who their favorite professor is and why in less than 140 characters. This is also an opportunity to thank professors for their support of WashU Athletics.

Saturday (Student-Athlete Celebration)
This programming event is intended to promote the DIII identity and importance of our student-athletes. A barbeque will begin at 1 p.m., and will last through the first game against Fontbonne University.
