Senior pitcher Evan Janifer and sophomore outfielder Haberly Kahn have been named to the 2016 Academic All-District Baseball and Softball teams in balloting by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Janifer has been named to the All-District III First Team for baseball. Kahn has been named to the All-District III First Team for softball. District III is comprised of the schools in New York State. By virtue of those honors, both players will move to the respective national ballots for consideration as Academic All-Americans.
Rochester's baseball team has qualified for the Liberty League playoffs – which will be held this week (Thursday-Saturday) at Union College in Schenectady. Rochester will play Clarkson University in its first game. The Yellowjackets and Golden Knights just completed a four-game series in Potsdam with each team winning two games.
Janifer has appeared in 10 games this year with seven starts, three complete games, and one shutout. He has a record of 4-4 with two saves and an earned run average of 1.63. He has allowed 54 hits in 49.2 innings pitched. Opponents have scored 18 runs, nine of them earned runs. He has walked 11 batters and struck out 41.
He has earned All-Liberty League honors for each of the last two years. As a sophomore in 2014, he was named to the D3baseball.com All-Region team as a closer. Janifer had a Rochester record nine saves that year and an ERA of 0.45. He was selected as a pre-season All-American by D3baseball.com in 2015. He began his career at Rochester as a shortstop.
In September, 2015, he received a Garnish Scholar Award from the University as one of the top 10 senior student-athletes. He was named to the Dean's List in six of his first seven semesters (through Fall 2015). He had a perfect 4.00 GPA in the Fall 2015 semester. Last summer, he interned with UBS in its Wealth Management Division and will join them full-time after graduation. He has a cumulative GPA of 3.56 on a 4.00 scale in Financial Economics with a minor in Legal Studies. The Montclair, N.J. native (Montclair HS) has been named to both the University Athletic Association and Liberty League All-Academic Teams for three straight years – sophomore through senior year.
The Yellowjacket softball team will compete in the NCAA Division III playoffs this weekend at St. John Fisher College. This is Rochester's third consecutive NCAA playoff appearance and its fourth in the last five years. Rochester earned the right to compete in NCAAs by winning the Liberty League softball title last weekend at home.
Kahn is a first-year starter in centerfield for Rochester. She has played in 37 of 47 possible games (Rochester is 26-21 overall, 22-11 since coming north from Florida). She has started 36 of those games. She has 14 hits in 76 at-bats, has scored seven runs and driven in nine runs. She was named to both the UAA and Liberty League All-Academic teams.
This coming fall, she will be a Teaching Assistant in Organic Chemistry6. She has done research in computational fluid dynamics on campus. In the Fall 2015 semester, she received the Iota Book Award from the campus chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, signifying her as one of the leading sophomores. This summer, she will do an internship and research in Hamburg, Germany. The Newton, Mass. native (Newton North) has a cumulative GPA of 3.98 in Chemical Engineering.
