Washington University Mourns Loss of Hall of Famer Jackie Schapp

Jacqueline (Jackie) Schapp, a longtime friend of Washington University in St. Louis and a loyal fan of the Bears, passed away on April 2, at the age of 92.

Schapp was a 1993 inductee into the Washington University in St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame and charter member of the W Club's Eliot Society, the fundraising organization supporting WashU Athletics. 

"Jackie Schapp was a champion for women's sports. She cared deeply about helping young women grow both on and off the court, and her support of our women's basketball program will have a lasting impact," said women's basketball coach Nancy Fahey. "For me personally, she was a mentor that I could also call a friend. Before each game she would give me a good luck hand shake. To this day when I pass that spot I think of Jackie. She was a loyal supporter win or lose, she just wanted us to play our hearts out. She will be dearly missed."

Prior to an illustrious 40-year career as a teacher, coach and administrator, Schapp excelled in field hockey and basketball at WashU. She captained both squads, achieving the highest individual honors at the time. Following her collegiate career, Schapp was invited to play in a number of international field hockey matches.

She also played softball in the American Softball Association for 10 years. Schapp was the recipient of numerous awards, including the "Slats" Moellering Award, and the McWilliams Classic MVP Award was named in her honor.

She graduated from WashU in 1947 with a bachelor's degree in education, and then received a master's degree from WashU in 1954 in health and physical education.

Visitation will be held Thursday, April 7, from 4-8 p.m., at Buchholz Mortuary West, 2211 Clarkson Road, Chesterfield, Mo. Eastern Star Service will be at 7 p.m. A second visitation will be held on Friday, April 8, at Graham Chapel on the WashU campus at 8:30 a.m., followed by a service at 9:30 a.m.
