One of the most accomplished student-athletes in the history of New York University, Adolph "Dolph" Schayes, passed away on Thursday, December 10, at the age of 87.
Schayes, NYU School of Engineering class of 1948, was a standout on the basketball court. The Bronx, NY, native helped lead the Violets to the NCAA Tournament Final Four and to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) Finals during his collegiate career. As a senior, he won the Haggerty Award as the best player in the New York area.
Schayes, who was included in the inaugural group of Violets to be inducted into the University's Athletics Hall of Fame in 1971, went on to become one of professional basketball's early superstars.
In a 16-year NBA career with the Syracuse Nationals (and then Philadelphia 76ers), Schayes was named to 12 consecutive All-Star Games and retired in 1964 as the all-time leading scorer in NBA history with 19,249 points. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA, in 1973, and was named to the NBA 50th Anniversary All-Time Team in 1996.
