Former University of Chicago head basketball and baseball coach John Angelus passed away on May 12 at the age of 82.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa., Angelus played minor league baseball from 1950-53 within the Boston Braves organization after high school. He then served three years in the United States Army, achieving the rank of corporal.

Angelus graduated from West Chester University in Pennsylvania with a bachelor's degree in education, and went on to earn his master's degree in English and education from Northwestern University. He arrived on UChicago's campus during the 1962-63 academic year to take on the dual roles of assistant men's basketball coach and assistant baseball coach. As an assistant, Angelus worked alongside legendary coaches Joseph Stampf in basketball and J. Kyle Anderson in baseball.

Angelus eventually succeeded both of his mentors, serving as head basketball coach for 16 years (1975-91) and head baseball coach for eight years (1971-78). The Maroons compiled a combined 201 victories in that time. UChicago competed as an independent and eventually joined the Midwest Conference and University Athletic Association over the course of his tenure.

Angelus concluded his coaching career after 1991 and went on to become Director of Intramurals and Club Sports at the University from 1992-2000. He retired in 2000 as Associate Professor Emeritus, Physical Education and Athletics.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11:00 AM (ET) on Thursday, May 26 at Faith Church in Dyer, Ind. A celebration of life will occur from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Saturday, May 28 at Jameson's Pub in Frankfort, Ill. The family requests that RSVPs for both events be sent to tychr@yahoo.com.
