Rochester Athletes Gain Lifetime Skills at UAA SAAC Meeting

From University of Rochester Athletics

Every campus has a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. At the University of Rochester, the group strives to represent and support the varsity athletic teams by building a positive and productive relationship with the Department of Athletics and Recreation. The group has representatives from every sport.

Earlier in August, the University Athletic Association held a two-day summer conference on the campus of Emory University in Atlanta. The UAA brought in the SAAC reps from each of its member schools. They were joined by administrators from several UAA institutions and by Dick Rasmussen, the Executive Director of the UAA.

Prior to the conference, each attendee was given an on-line questionnaire to complete and return. The questionnaires were part of a program titled Emergenetics, a service that provides individualized profiles outlining thinking preferences which can lead to a better understanding of self and personal strengths.

All four of Rochester's attendees blogged about the experience – how the conference went and what they took from it:

Sean Corcoran is a senior from Fairport, NY and a member of the track and field team. His blog talks about how he will benefit in his role as a team captain by working with differing personality types and preferences.

Bianca Dyer, a sophomore from Tampa, FL, plays volleyball and tennis at Rochester. She talked about how she will be able to interact with teammates more effectively now.

Siobhan Seigne is a junior from Norwich, VT who competes for the track and field team. She discussed how the students learned to develop the often-overlooked leadership skill of making sure that everyone's voice is being heard.

Jun Yuminaga is a senior from Bayside, NY who plays for the tennis team. He discovered how differing personalities interact with each other – sometimes leading to conflict, sometimes leading to agreement.
