Washington University in St. Louis alum Maggie Mullen is trading in her softball cleats for some sneakers.

Mullen, who graduated in 2014 with a bachelor's degree in religious studies, is joining Team USA Handball. She will move to Auburn, Ala., to train full-time this summer with the national team, in addition to beginning a master of science in exercise science at Auburn.

Mullen will also continue competitive CrossFit. She ranks seventh in the state of Texas, 101st in the United States and 152nd in the world.

"I still don't know all the rules," Mullen said. "I do know that the program hosted open tryouts intended for former collegiate athletes, particularly basketball, softball, volleyball, or soccer. They hope to qualify for Tokyo 2020, but are up against some stiff competition. In order to qualify, we need to win the Pan Am Games in 2019."

Mullen was a four-time all-Midwest Region and All-University Athletic Association (UAA) selection for the WashU Softball Team, and earned Capital One Second-Team Academic All-America honors in 2014. She had a career batting average of .404 in 178 games played, and finished her four-year career with 30 homeruns and 156 RBI. Mullen is the WashU all-time runs scored leader (160), and ranks in the top five in 12 offensive categories.

She has been working for Leonora Polonsky & Associates the past four years, including the last two as lead researcher.
