From Emory University Athletics
Senior Jake Davis scored a game-high 33 points in
sparking the Emory men's basketball team to a win at Carnegie
Mellon Friday evening. The Eagles raised their overall record
to 14-7, 6-4 in the University Athletic Association, following a
100-86 verdict over the Tartans who slumped to 10-11 overall, 3-7
in the league.
Davis, who scored 19 points in the decisive second half, ended the
night hitting 11-of-22 from the floor, including three-of-six from
beyond the arc, in posting his 14th game of 20 or
more points and fifth of 30 or more points this season. Davis
had plenty of offensive help with classmate McPherson
Moore adding 24 points on seven-of-12 field goal shooting,
four-of-six from beyond arc, while junior Alex
Foster poured in 14 points. Junior Michael
Florin rounded out the team's double-figure scorers with 13
points while dishing out five assists.
The Eagles wound up shooting 50.7 percent from the floor
(35-of-69), including a blistering 57.1 percent (16-of-28) over the
final 20 minutes of action when they outpointed CMU by a 57-42
margin. Emory was successful on 11-of-24 three-point
attempts, the team's seven outing of the year with 10 or more
triples, and converted 19-of-22 free throw attempts. The
Tartans showed a 41.2 percent mark (28-of-68) from the floor and
were successful on 44.4 percent (12-of-27) of their three-point
attempts. CMU finished with a slight 39-38 edge in rebounding
with sophomore Will Trawick leading Emory in that
category with 11 boards.
Emory trailed by a 53-52 count with 14:07 left in the game but
scored seven straight points to claim a six-point advantage with
12:46 on the clock. A triple by CMU's Christian Manoli drew
the host team to within five points with 10:20 remaining but a 7-2
Eagle spurt, with Foster scoring four points in that stretch, gave
them their first double-figure advantage of the night at
71-61. CMU stayed within striking distance, trailing by a
76-69 margin with 6:37 left, but Emory put some distance between
itself and the Tartans with an 11-2 spree, with Davis scoring the
first five points, to balloon its lead to 87-71 with 4:05
left. The Tartans made a last-ditch comeback attempt, scoring
nine straight points to slice their deficit to seven points, but
Moore personally accounted for the game's next five points to
extend Emory's cushion back to a dozen points, 92-80, with 2:33 on
the clock.
In a fast-paced and entertaining opening stanza, Carnegie Mellon used a late surge in claiming a 44-43 advantage at halftime. After Jake Davis hit his second of two straight buckets, Emory held a 30-20 advantage with 7:20 left in the half. The Tartans quickly responded, hitting three consecutive three pointers in an 83-second span, to draw to within one point. A bucket by Davis, who scored 14 points in the first half, gave the Eagles a 38-34 advantage with 3:01 on the clock, but the Tartans tallied eight unanswered points, sinking a couple of treys in the run, to assume a 42-38 edge. Emory stemmed the tide with sophomore Alex Foster hitting a three pointer followed by a basket by Florin to go ahead by a point before CMU's Matt Hillman closed out the scoring with a basket. Emory shot 46.3 percent (19-of-41) from the floor in the first half while CMU was successful on 51.7 percent (15-of-29). The Tartans used the three-point shot to its advantage, sinking nine triples in 13 attempts while Emory converted five in 13 tries. In addition to Davis's total, Florin and McPherson each added eight points.
