From Emory University Athletics
Senior Alex Foster recorded his third double-double of
the year with 20 points and 15 rebounds in leading the No. 9 Emory
men's basketball team to a Sunday afternoon win over Maryville
College. The Eagles ran their record to 4-0 following a 68-57
decision over the Scots who slipped to 3-3.
Foster led all players with 20 points, her third outing of the year
of either reaching or surpassing that total, hitting seven-of-16
from the floor, while his rebound total topped all players as
well. Junior Davis Rao played a key role in the
victory with a career-high 14 points, converting four-of-seven from
the floor. While it shot a season-low 35.1percent
(20-of-57) from the floor, Emory held the Scots to 34.9
percent (22-of-63) from the field, the fourth straight game that
the opposition had finished with an effort of less than 40
percent. Emory spread out its three-point attack with seven
players accounting for 11 treys, its third outing in double digits
this year. The Eagles did enjoy a 47-37 edge in rebounding
with sophomore Jonathan Terry complementing Foster's 15
boards with a career-high nine caroms.
Emory led by a 38-33 margin early in the second half before going
on a game-turning 12-2 spurt, with Rao scoring seven points and
freshman Whit Rapp sinking a big three pointer in that
stretch, to extend its advantage to 50-35 with 10:32 remaining in
the game. However, the Scots battled back into contention with a
13-1 blitz, with Jaumonee Byrd scoring five of his team-high 19
points in that run, to draw to within a 51-48 count with 7:20 on
the clock. A three-point play by Foster gave the Eagles some
breathing room at 54-48, and a three pointer by Terry pushed Emory
to a 59-51 lead with 5:02 left. After a bucket by MC's Byrd,
Foster countered with a trey that made the score 62-53 in the
Eagles' favor. The Scots weren't done, however, creeping to within
five points with 2:26 on the clock. But that was as close as
Maryville would get as the Eagles held the Scots scoreless for the
remainder of the game while posting six unanswered
points.
With Foster and Rao scoring seven points apiece, Emory went into
halftime with a 33-27 lead. After a bucket by the Scots'
Spencer Shoffner cut Emory's edge to 20-16, three pointers by Terry
and senior Michael Florin highlighted a 7-0 Eagle run
that gave them a 27-16 cushion with 5:19 left in the stanza. A
jumper by Foster helped Emory maintain a nine-point bulge, 33-24,
before a three-pointer by the Scots closed out the scoring for the
half.
