Emory Defeats Trinity

From Emory University Athletics

The No. 6-ranked Emory men's basketball team used 23 points apiece from senior Alex Foster and junior Will Trawick in earning a victory over Trinity University in its opening game at the Lopata Classic in Saint Louis, Missouri. Then Eagles upped their overall record to 5-1 following an 83-74 decision over the Tigers who fell to 0-6.

Foster converted 7-of-16 from the floor and seven-of-eight from the charity stripe in recording his sixth double-figure scoring effort of the year and fifth of 20 or more points. Foster also topped all players with 14 rebounds, all on the defensive end of the floor, which represented his fourth double-double of the year. Trawick was successful on eight-of-14 of his field goal tries, including seven three-point field goals in 11 opportunities, in notching his fourth double-figure outing of the campaign. It was Trawick's second game of the season with seven three pointers, tying the program's third-highest individual game total. Senior Josh Schattie rounded out the team's double-figure scorers with a career-high tying 14 points, sinking seven-of-nine from the floor, while snagging nine boards.

Emory ended the game shooting 45.3 percent (29-of-64) from the floor compared to TU's 46.7 percent (28-of-60). The Eagles sank a dozen three pointers, their fifth game of double-digits in that category, in 30 tries while the Tigers were successful on eight-of-21. Emory concluded the evening with a 43-34 advantage in rebounding.

Behind six points by Schattie, Emory used an 11-3 spurt early in the second half in building what would be its biggest lead of the game, 58-43, with 15:44 remaining. The Tigers countered with a 14-4 run that drew them to within five points with 10:35 remaining. Trinity stayed within five points on several occasions following that, the final time with 4:52 left in the game after a bucket by A.J. Pulliam. Emory sealed the game with a 7-0 run, with the first five points coming from Foster and the final two by freshman Whit Rapp, to extend its lead to 76-64 with 1:52 on the clock.

With Trawick scoring the team's first 11 points of the game en route to a 17-point first half, Emory went into halftime up by a 44-36 margin. The Eagles led by a 24-23 count following a Trawick triple with 9:48 left in the stanza before Trinity scored seven unanswered points to take a six-point advantage. Emory responded with an 11-0 charge, keyed by three pointers from Rapp and sophomore Jonathan Terry, along with a pair of buckets by Foster, in taking a 36-31 lead with 2:46 left. After a Trinity three pointer cut its deficit to two points, the Eagles closed out the half on a 6-2 run over the final 2:15 of the stanza.
