Emory University was saddened to hear of the passing of former men's assistant basketball coach Geno Morgan. At the time of his death, Morgan was the head coach of the boy's team at Wasatch Academy located in Mount Pleasant, Utah.
Morgan began his stint at Emory on former head coach Brett Zuver's staff from 2004-05 through 2006-07, and then remained on when Jason Zimmerman took over the coaching duties beginning in 2007. He stayed on the Eagles' staff through the end of the 2008-09 campaign where he then moved into the head coaching chair at Wasatch Academy. Morgan enjoyed great success at the Academy winning state titles in 2011, 2013 and 2014, while winning Best of State Coach of the Year honors on six occasions.
"Geno was an invaluable member of the coaching staff, a tremendous person and a dear friend," said Zimmerman. "He possessed such a positive spirit and sincerely cared about the players on the team. There is no question he played a vital role in helping laying the foundation in those early years that has helped Emory Basketball reach the success that it has achieved. We will miss him and our thoughts go out to his family and to those whose who were touched by his influence."
Morgan also served as the head boy's basketball coach at East Anchorage High School in Alaska, capturing a state crown his first campaign while finishing runner-up his second season. He was named Coach of the Year for the 1999-2000 campaign.
Before serving at East Anchorage High School, Geno was an assistant coach at the University of Alaska-Anchorage (1995-96 through 1996-97) and helped that program to a pair of appearances in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
