The University of Rochester men's basketball team shot
lights out in a 78-50 victory over Brandeis University on Sunday
afternoon.
Rochester (7-11, 3-4 UAA) tied a University Athletic
Association single game record with 17 3-pointers on the day,
shooting 65.4% from downtown. The 17 treys are also the 2nd
most in Rochester history, tying the mark set on January 4th, 2011
against RIT. UR has won three of its last four games.
With the loss, Brandeis drops to 7-11 overall and 2-5 in the
UAA.
The Yellowjackets started out on fire from long range and
continued it throughout the entire first half. Rochester hit
its first three treys to jump out to an early 9-8 edge. UR
wouldn't cool off at all the rest of the first 20 minutes,
combining to outscore the Judges 39-7 the rest of the
way.
Seltzer and Montague were the top players for the 'Jackets in
the half, with Seltzer scoring 11 straight points during a 34-3
extended run over about 12 and a half minutes. Seltzer would
finish the first half with 19 points, matching his career high
while Montague added 16, shooting 6-6 from the floor. Overall
the Yellowjackets drained 12 of 16 (75%) from 3-point range and was
a blistering 18 of 25 (72%) overall from the floor.
Rochester got it done on the defensive end as well, as
Brandeis struggled to find its touch in the first half. The
Judges finished the first 20 minutes shooting just 7 of 23 (30.4%)
overall and were 0 for 8 from behind the arc while also committing
10 turnovers.
In the second half, the Judges were able to hold Seltzer and
Montague scoreless, but the damage was already done as Rochester
held on to cruise for a 28 point victory, its largest margin of
victory this season, and biggest since beating D'Youvile 119-66 on
November 16th, 2013.
Besides Seltzer and Montague leading the way, Tyler Seidman
hit three 3-pointers en route to 11 points as the third UR scorer
in double-figures. Kevin Sheehy chipped in eight points while
Sam Borst-Smith added seven points and four assists. Overall,
11 players scored for the Yellowjackets.
Leading the Judges was Tim Reale and Jordan Cooper who each
scored nine points. Carlin Haymon added seven points for
Brandeis.
