Riding a strong first half which saw it build a 15-point lead,
the University of Rochester men's basketball team cruised to a
72-55 victory over Gordon College in the opening round of the UR
Chuck Resler Tournament on Friday night.
Senior Kevin Sheehy scored a game-high 18 points (12-14 FT) while
adding in 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals while junior Dylan
Peretz added a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards to lift
the Yellowjackets (2-0).
Rochester plays Utica College in the finals of the Resler
Tournament at 6 pm Saturday while the Fighting Scots (0-2) take on
SUNY New Paltz in the 3rd place game at 1 pm.
With 6:38 left in the first half, UR held a slim 23-21 lead before
rolling out a 16-3 run to close the first half. Heading into
the break, UR would lead 39-24. Over the course of the run,
Sheehy would pour in seven straight points with Peretz adding in
five and Tyler Sankes chipping in four. Sankes would finish
with 13 points and eight boards for UR.
During that stretch, Rochester's defense buckled down, allowing
Gordon to shoot just 1-9 from the field and commit five
turnovers.
After scoring the opening bucket of the second half, Gordon would
get back in the game going on a 14-5 run over seven minutes to cut
the UR lead to eight at 46-38.
Rochester lead would remain in the low double figures, eventually
getting back up to 15 after a fast break slam dunk by sophomore
Mack Montague. For the game, he finished with 13 points.
The Yellowjackets as a team would shoot just 32% (19-59) from the
floor, but made up for it at the line where they made 28-36
shots. Gordon went to the line just seven times during the
game, making four. From the floor, the Fighting Scots shot
36% (22-61) while sinking seven 3-pointers.
Gordon had three starters in double figures, with Jaren Yang
leading the way with 13 points. Both Dominic Paradis and Hans
Miersma added 10 points with Miersma finishing with a
double-double, adding 11 rebounds.
