Mack Montague and Jared Seltzer scored 21 points apiece to
lead a balanced attack for the University of Rochester in an 85-75
victory over New York University at the Louis Alexander Palestra on
Friday evening.
Kevin Sheehy, Sam Borst-Smith, and Tyler Sankes scored 10
points apiece for the Yellowjackets (8-11 overall, 4-4 University
Athletic Association). It was Rochester's fourth win in the last
five games and marked a sweep of the series against NYU. Rochester
upended then-23rd ranked NYU, 64-60,
in lower Manhattan last Friday. NYU is 13-6 overall, 4-4 in the
UAA.
Hakeem Harris scored 20 points for NYU, including all nine of
his free throw attempts. He added three steals. Evan Kupferberg had
15 points for NYU and Ross Udine scored 12.
Coupled with the other UAA results from Friday night,
Rochester is locked in a three-way tie for fourth place in the UAA
standings with NYU and Washington. Chicago is 6-2. Emory and Case
Reserve are 5-3.
Seltzer had 21 points and 7 boards.Last Sunday,
Rochester blistered the nets at a 65% rate outside the arc (17-26).
The solid shooting continued on Friday. Montague hit five of eight
treys. Seltzer and Sheehy had two apiece. Borst-Smith and Seidman
made on each. Overall, Rochester was 11-21 from distance. The
Yellowjackets were 25 of 48 from the floor overall (52%) and made
24 of 31 at the foul line (77.4%).
Rochester held its own on the backboards. Seltzer grabbed
seven rebounds. Sankes and Dylan Peretz had five each. Rochester
out-rebounded NYU, 34-25, and scored 11 second-chance
points.
Montague and Borst-Smith sank three-pointers in an 11-3 run
late in the first half that pushed Rochester into a 40-26 lead. The
Yellowjackets led, 41-32, at the half.
Kupferberg made a layup to get NYU within four, 43-39, three
minutes into the second half. The Violets were only down by five,
48-43, when Rochester scored eight of the next 10 points to take a
57-45 lead with 11:30 left. Sheehy scored five of the eight points.
After Zack Ayers made a layup, Sheehy drove the lane with a
change-of-pace dribble and laid the ball off the glass for a 52-43
lead. Harris sank two free throws for NYU (52-45).
Sheehy came down on the next possession and hit a trey from
the top of the key. After an NYU miss, Alex Hoey hit a 10-footer in
the lane, pushing the lead to 12, 59-47.
Three-pointers from Joe Timmes (his second of the game) and
Harris brought NYU within nine midway through the second half.
Kupferberg scored from the low block and later added the front half
of a one-and-one to keep NYU within eight, 64-56, with eight
minutes left.
Rochester scored six straight. Seltzer made a 15-footer to
the right of the key. Borst-Smith sank a three-pointer from left
wing, and Seltzer made two free thows. It was 71-56 with less than
seven minutes to play.
The Yellowjackets were able to maintain a lead of at least
eight points throughout. In the last 3:46, Rochester sank nine of
10 from the foul line, five of those by Borst-Smith.
