Rochester's Big Plays Spark 64-60 Win at #23 NYU

Dylan Peretz made two big plays in the final minute – a rebound dunk and then a block of the potential game-tying layup with four seconds left – as the University of Rochester upset 23rd-ranked New York University at the Coles Sports Center on Friday evening.

With Rochester (6-11, 2-4 University Athletic Association) nursing a two point lead, 60-58, Peretz dunked a followup of a missed jumper by Rochester's Sam-Borst Smith with 59 seconds left. NYU made another layup to cut it to 62-60. After Rochester misfired on a 3-pointer, NYU's Joe Timmes tried a layup with four seconds left. Peretz blocked it. Tyler Seidman rebounded the ball for Rochester and sank two free throws with one second left to seal the win.

Borst-Smith led Rochester with 25 points. He added nine rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Kevin Sheehy scor4ed eight points as did Jared Seltzer. Mack Montague scored seven points. Peretz had six points, seven rebounds, and four blocks.

Ross Udine led NYU with 16 points, four assists, and three steals. Evan Kupferberg had 15 points and 12 rebounds. NYU is 12-5, 3-3 in the UAA.

Rochester led for the majority of the first half, building its lead to as many as nine points four different times. The Yellowjackets had an eight-point cushion at the break, 37-29, on the strength of shooting 44% from the floor.

At the start of the second half, Kevin Sheehy knocked home a 3-pointer, stretching the lead to 11 points, 40-29. The Yellowjackets went cold and the Violets heated up. Over a five minute stretch, NYU scored 12 straight points and took the lead, 41-40, with 14:58 left in the second half.

The score was tied at 56-all before Borst-Smith made a conventional three-point play, driving for a layup and adding the free throw to push Rochester in front, 59-56, with 3:41 left. Kupferberg's layup got the Violets within one, 59-58, at 3:08 and Borst-Smith sank the back end of two shots at 1:39 for a two-point edge, 60-58. That set up the frentic final 90-plus seconds.
