The No. 4-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team broke open a six-point second half deficit with a 19-0 run as the Bears posted a 79-68 victory at Brandeis University Sunday afternoon in Waltham, Mass.
Washington U., who won its 16th-straight game on Sunday, improved to 14-2, 3-2 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while Brandeis fell to 7-9, 2-3 in the UAA.
Junior guard Luke Silverman-Lloyd scored a career-high 20 points on six three-pointers, while junior Nick Burt added 14 points and nine rebounds. Senior forward Matt Palucki scored all of his 12 points in the second half, while senior guard David Fatoki had his third double-double with 10 points and a career-high 11 assists.
After hitting just 2-of-18 from three-point range in Friday's loss at NYU, the Bears opened Sunday's contest hitting 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. A three-pointer from Silverman-Lloyd gave Washington U. the early 9-4 lead, and then he canned his second triple to make it 20-13.
Silverman-Lloyd drilled his third three-pointer of the half from the top of the arc to push the advantage to 25-13 with less than 12 minutes to play forcing a full timeout by Brandeis. Silverman-Lloyd had 11 first-half points to lead the Bears.
Brandeis scored eight-straight points out of the timeout to trim the lead to 25-21. The Bears made it 29-21 on a breakaway dunk by Bregman, who came down on his leg after the dunk and did not return. Bregman, who made his first career start, had eight points on 4-of-5 shooting.
The Judges continued to chip away at the Bears lead, and gained its first advantage at 32-30 after a three-pointer by Robinson Vilmont from the corner with 4:30 to play.
Washington U. took a 38-37 lead to half after shooting 51.9 percent (14-of-27) from the field. The Bears also hit 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. Brandeis kept it close hitting 6-of-9 from three-point range, and had a 19-4 advantage in bench points.
Brandeis opened the second half with a 7-0 run to gain a six-point lead (44-38), but Washington U. responded scoring the next 17 points to take a 55-44 lead and force two full timeouts by Brandeis. Palucki had six points and Burt added five during the decisive run.
The Judges would not go away after the 19-0 run by the Bears as they hit three-straight triples in a 90-second span to trim the lead to four. Head coach Mark Edwards called timeout and the Bears responded with four-straight points.
Silverman-Lloyd put the game out of reach at 73-59 with less than five minutes to play with back-to-back threes, including one from the top of the key from 28-feet out. The Bears shot 54.8 percent (17-of-31) from the field in the second half.
Washington U. shot 46.9 percent (31-58) from the field for the game, and outrebounded Brandeis 32-23. The Bears had 23 assists on 31 field goals, and had a 25-11 advantage in points off turnovers.
Jack Fay (14 points), Carlin Hamon (12), Jordan Cooper (11) and Samuel Dowden (10) all scored in double figures for Brandeis, who hit 11-of-21 from three-point range in the loss.
Bear Notebook: Washington U. leads the all-time series with Brandeis, 42-11, and the Bears have won 11 of the last 15 meetings … Palucki went over 1,100 points in his career, while Burt eclipsed 600 points … Palucki has his streak of 69-straight starts snapped … Brandeis entered the contest leading the UAA in scoring defense at 60.9 points per game.
