All five starters scored in double figures as the No. 12-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team scored a season-high 95 points in a 95-75 win at Case Western Reserve University Sunday afternoon in University Athletic Association (UAA) action.
Washington U. improved to 16-4 overall and 5-4 in the UAA, while Case dropped to 14-6 overall and 5-4 in the conference. The Bears avenged an 89-78 loss to the Spartans in St. Louis Feb. 1, and snapped a two-game losing skid.
After leading by eight at halftime, Washington U. put together an 18-10 run to start the second half, including 11 points by junior Luke Silverman-Lloyd, to take a 64-48 lead with 14:24 left in the game. The Bears continued to pull away and Silverman-Lloyd's fourth three of the second half made it 75-57 with 8:59 to play.
Case rallied to within 79-67, but Washington U. answered with a 10-3 run to regain a 19-point advantage on a basket by junior Mitch Styczynski with 2:37 remaining. A three-point play closed the deficit to 16, but baskets by Styczynski and sophomore Clinton Hooks finished the 20-point win for the Bears.
The two teams played back-and-forth, trading leads eight times in the first eight minutes before a jumper by Styczynski gave the Bears a 16-15 lead with 12:34 to play in the opening half. After a timeout by Case, senior David Fatoki hit a pullup jumper to make it a three-point lead for the Bears with 11:44 left. Junior Brandon Staffeil came off the bench to convert a three-point play, before draining the first three-pointer of his career to push the lead to 24-19 with 9:55 left in the half.
A three-point play got the Spartans to within 26-24, but Silverman-Lloyd answered with a three-point play at the other end to regain a five-point advantage for Washington U. After a basket by Case, the Bears went o a 9-2 run to extend the lead to 38-28 with 4:05 remaining in the first half. A three-pointer by the Spartans brought them within 42-36 with 1:43 left in the half, but Styczynski scored the final four points of the half for the Bears to give them a 46-38 lead at halftime.
Washington U. shot 54.8 percent (34-62) from the field in the game, including 8-of-16 from three-point range. The Bears also finished 19-of-25 at the free-throw line. Case finished with 46.7 percent (28-60) field-goal shooting, but was 8-of-24 from beyond the arc. The Spartans converted 11-of-17 free throws. Washington U. outrebounded Case 40-26 in the game, and finished with a 24-13 advantage in second-chance points.
Styczynski scored a career-high 20 points and pulled down five rebounds. Senior Nick Burt finished with 19 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Silverman-Lloyd added 17 points, including 4-of-6 from three-point range, and five rebounds. Senior Matt Palucki also had 17 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Fatoki totaled 13 points, six assists and four steals.
Washington U. continues a four-game road trip at No. 14-ranked Emory University Friday, Feb. 13, at 8 p.m. (ET), and University of Rochester Sunday, Feb. 15, at Noon (ET).
