Sam Borst-Smith of Rochester Named to NABC 1st Team All-District

University of Rochester men's basketball junior Sam Borst-Smith received his third postseason honor by being named to the NABC Division III First-Team All-District for the East Region.Voting for the award is conducted among members of the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

Borst-Smith is one of four UAA players that were named to All-District teams by the NABC; Evan Kupferberg from NYU was also named to the First Team for the East Region, Matt Clark from Case Western Reserve was named to the Second Team for the Great Lakes Region, and Will Trawick from Emory was named to the First Team for the South region.

Borst-Smith is a native of San Pedro, CA (Peninsula HS and Lawrenceville [NJ] HS). He was also recently named to the East Region Second Team by D3hoops.com.  In the first week of March, he was named First Team All-University Athletic Association. Borst-Smith was a Second Team All-UAA honoree as a sophomore in 2014-15.

On March 9th, Borst-Smith was named State Farm Assist of the Year winner, for his game-winning assist to teammate Mack Montague from UR's February 7th win over Chicago. The play received national and internationally attention from a number of media outlets including ESPN, Fox Sports, Yahoo, and Bleacher Report. Borst-Smith intentionally missed a free throw with 2.7 seconds left in overtime and Rochester down by two. He got his own rebound off of the front rim and passed to Montague who sank a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Rochester a 77-76 victory. The play has received more than 1.1 million views online.

The Yellowjacket guard had a very impressive junior season, leading Rochester in scoring with 17.2 ppg., 88 total assists and 50 total steals. He shot 44.9% from the floor, 35.4% from three-point range and 81.3% at the free-throw line. On February 21, he scored his 1,000th career point and became the 28th player to reach four figures at Rochester.
