Senior Will Trawick led five double-figure scorers with a game-high 16 points in leading the Emory men's basketball team to a Wednesday evening home win over Covenant College. The Eagles boosted their record to 7-3 following a 76-63 decision over the Scots who slipped to 5-5.
Trawick wound up the evening converting five-of-nine from the floor and five of his six free throw attempts in notching his third straight and seventh double-figure scoring performance of the campaign. Junior Jonathan Terry came off the bench to contribute 15 points, knocking down four three pointers in seven tries along with three free throws. Sophomore Adam Gigax chipped in 12 points and senior Davis Rao and junior Austin DaGue rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points apiece. Rao converted a pair of triples, allowing him to become the 16th player in program history to reach the century mark in that category. Sophomore Whit Rapp led all players with eight rebounds while dishing out six assists.
Behind Trawick's 10 points and 51.9 percent (14 of 27) shooting from the floor, Emory claimed a 43-34 lead at halftime. After a three pointer by Terry highlighted a 9-3 Emory run that gave it a 24-15 advantage with 10:23 left in the half, the Scots responded with eight straight points to slice the Eagles' margin to one. Holding a 33-30 lead, Emory closed out the final 4:35 of the opening half on a 10-4 spurt with Gigax scoring five of those points, the final three on a trey at the buzzer, to seize the nine-point edge.
Rao's first trey of the evening opened the second half, boosting the Eagles to a 46-34 cushion, but the Scots hung around, clawing back to 51-45 with 13:25 on the clock. From that point, Emory took command with a 15-3 barrage, which saw four different players notch points, upping the score to 66-48 with 7:43 on the clock. Rao and Gigax started the avalanche with back-to-back treys while Trawick added four points and Terry a trey. The closest the Scots would get from that stage was 11 points with under a minute remaining.
Emory ended the night hitting 47.3 percent (26 of 55) from the field, 34.6 percent (9 of 26) from distance, compared to Covenant's 40 percent (24 of 60). The Eagles were solid at the charity stripe, posting a 71.4 percent mark (15 of 21), while grabbing 38 rebounds to the Scots' 33.
