Emory Earns Road Win At Guilford

Emory senior Davis Rao led five double-figure scorers with a season-high 19 points and the Eagles made the most of a lethal three-point shooting display in posting a Sunday afternoon road win at Guilford. Emory upped its record to 5-3 following an 82-66 decision over the Quakers who slipped to 4-3.

Emory ended the contest hitting 46.2 percent (30 of 65) of its field goal attempts, including a season-high 45.9 percent from three-point range, knocking down a season-best 17 triples, the program's second-highest game total ever, in 37 tries. The Eagles were exceptionally sharp over the final 20 minutes of action, successfully converting 58 percent (18 of 31) of their attempts from the floor en route to registering a 48-35 scoring edge over GC. Guilford closed out the afternoon with a 37.9 percent (22 of 58) showing from the floor, 21.7 percent (5 of 23) from beyond the arc

Eighteen of Rao's points came as a result of sinking a personal-best six treys in eight attempts, with that total tying the 11th-best individual game mark in school history. Senior Will Trawick turned in a 14-point afternoon that including for triples while junior Austin DaGue came through with his sixth double-digit scoring performance of the year, chipping in 12 points while grabbing four rebounds. Junior Jonathan Terry and sophomore Adam Gigax each scored 10 points, with Gigax adding a team-high five boards.   

Holding a three-point edge at the start of the second half,  Emory led by a 50-46 margin with 12:46 left in the contest, before a bucket by sophomore Whitt Rapp followed by back-to-back thee pointers by freshman Beau Bommarito, sparked an 8-0 run that stretched the Eagles' advantage to a dozen points. After four straight GC points, a buckets by Dague and Terry, followed by a Trawick triple, boosted Emory to a 68-53 cushion with 7:14 remaining. The Quakers drew to within 12 points with 5:24 on the clock, but DaGue drained back-to-back three pointers and Terry added a basket that raised Emory's margin to 79-59 with just over three minutes remaining.

After hitting just two of its first 11 shots to open the game, Eagles trailed by a 13-4 count with 11:30 remaining in the first half. Emory regrouped and posted a 23-6 run, which saw it sink six (three each by Rao and Trawick) of its seven first-half three pointers in that stretch, to claim a 27-19 advantage. The Quakers then closed out the final 4:18 of the stanza by scoring 12 of the game's next 19 points to slice the Eagles lead to 34-31 as the teams headed into halftime. Rao connected on four triples in five attempts en route to totaling 13 points while Trawick accounted for 11 points, nine coming on his trio of three pointers. 

The Eagles used the long ball to their advantage during the opening 20 minutes, converting on 38.9 percent (7 of 18) from beyond the arc, compared to GC's one three pointer in 12 tries.  Overall, Emory connected on 35.3 percent (12 of 34) from the floor while Guilford was successful on 37.5 percent (12 of 32).
