Emory Wins At No. 15 NYU

From Emory University Athletics

Senior Will Trawick totaled a game-high 21 points in leading the Emory men's basketball team to a Friday evening victory at New York University. The Eagles won their second straight game and upped their overall record to 9-4 (2-0 in the UAA) following a 71-64 verdict over the No. 15 Violets who suffered their first setback in 12 outings while seeing their league record go to 1-1.

Trawick ended the evening sinking six-of-13 from the floor, including five-of-nine from three-point range, along with all four of his free throw attempts in registering his ninth double-figure scoring outing of the year and third of 20 or more points. Sophomore Adam Gigax added 13 points, all coming in the first half, while Whit Rapp rounded out the trio with 12 points.

After seeing a 12-point half lead reduced to five points with 9:47 left in the game, the Eagles went on a decisive 16-4 blitz over the next 6:40, to race to a 61-44 advantage. Trawick accounted for nine points, sinking three treys during the run, while classmate Davis Rao chipped in five points. A 7-1 NYU spurt drew it to within 11 points with 2:14 on the clock, but a pair of charity tosses by Trawick with 35 ticks remaining gave Emory a 66-56 lead.

While NYU closed out the game holding a slim edge in field goal shooting, 36.4 percent (24 of 66) to Emory's 33.8 percent (22 of 65), the Eagles were successful on 37.9 percent (11 of 29) of their three-point opportunities while the Violets converted just 23.1 percent (6 of 26).  Emory's 11 triples represented the sixth time this year it finished in double digits and upped its record to 5-1 in such contests. NYU did finish with a 50-44 advantage in rebounding with Trawick pacing Emory's effort with eight boards while Rao finished with seven.

Emory used the three-point shot to its advantage in staking itself to a 39-27 lead heading into halftime.  The Eagles were successful on 36.8 percent (7 of 19) from beyond the arc during the opening 20 minutes while NYU was able to hit just one of its 13 attempts.  Gigax totaled 13 first-half points, hitting his first four shots of the contest (three triples), and ending the stanza five-of-eight from the floor and three-of-five from distance.  Trawick chipped in eight points, hitting a pair of treys in the process, while Jonathan Terryadded five points.  Emory held a one-point lead with 9:30 left in the half before going on an 11-1 run, started by three pointers by Gigax and Trawick, to bolt to a 32-21 advantage with 6:27 remaining.  The Violets did get to within eight points before a tip-in by Gigax followed by three pointer with Terry enabled the Eagles to post the 12-point bulge at the break.
