Senior Will Trawick led four double-figure scorers with 24 points, and the Emory men's basketball team moved into sole possession of first place in the University Athletic Association following a Sunday afternoon win at Washington University. The Eagles won their fourth straight game and upped their overall record to 13-5, 6-1 in the league with an 82-73 triumph over the Bears who fell to 10-8 overall, 2-5 in the conference.
Trawick ended the contest converting seven of his 13 field goal attempts along with 10 free throws in 12 tries en route to registering his 14th double-figure scoring performance of the year and fifth of 20 or more points. Senior Davis Rao contributed 16 points in the victory, knocking down six-of-eight from the floor, including a pair of treys, while sophomores Adam Gigax and Whit Rapp rounded out the double-digit producers with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Rapp also doled out 10 assists, his fourth double-figure effort of the campaign.
Trawick totaled 15 points and helped Emory shoot 55 percent (11 of 20) from the floor in the second half. The Eagles led by a 46-45 margin early in the second stanza before going on a 15-5 run, with junior Austin DaGue scoring all seven of his points in that stretch and Trawick totaling four points, running their lead to 61-50 with 12:33 remaining in the game. WU responded by scoring eight of the game's next 10 points, drawing to within five points with 8:56 on the clock. The teams traded baskets over the next four minutes and when Rao hit a jumper with 5:40 left, Emory enjoyed a 71-64 cushion. However, the Bears hit three charity tosses, the last two by Kevin Kucera, to slice their deficit to three points. Trawick then helped Emory seal the outcome, scoring six points during a 9-3 burst that upped the Eagles' advantage to 80-70 with just 55 ticks remaining. Trawick's offensive production on the day enabled him to move into 21st place on the program's all-time scoring list with 885 points.
Emory shot 50.9 percent (28 of 55) from the floor, its high for a league game this season, including 35.3 percent from three-point range. Wash U recorded a mark of 44.2 percent (23 of 52) from the field and converted 33.3 percent (7 of 21) from beyond the arc. Emory was successful on 71.4 percent (20 of 28) from the stripe compared the WU's showing of 62.5 percent (20 of 32). Emory finished with a 35-34 edge in rebounding and was led in that category by junior Jonathan Terry's six boards.
In a closely played opening 20 minutes, Emory used 12 points from Rapp and 10 from Gigax in claiming a 43-40 edge at the break. Rapp accounted for his first-half total and Emory's last 12 points over the final 3:30 of the stanza, closing out the half sinking four-of-six field goals, including an off-balance trey at the buzzer that snapped a 40-40 deadlock. Gigax was successful on four of his eight field goal tries, including a pair of triples in four attempts. Emory was successful on 48.6 percent (17 of 35) from the floor, including 38.5 percent (5 of 13) from distance, while the Bears connected on 42.9 percent (12 of 28) from the field. WU attempted 18 free throws, making 13 of them, compared to Emory's four makes in six opportunities.
A three pointer by freshman and Saint Louis native Beau Bommarito gave Emory a 16-10 advantage, but Bears countered with an 11-4 spurt that put them ahead by a 21-20 count with 9:16 left. A Gigax three pointer, sandwiched around a pair of buckets by Will Trawick, accounted for a 7-0 Emory run that gave the Eagles their second six-point cushion of the half, but WU battled back to take a 35-33 advantage with just under two minutes on the clock. Rapp then took over, scoring 10 points over the last 1:36 of the half, sinking three buckets and three free throws in four attempts.
