D3hoops.com Names Sam Borst-Smith and Jared Seltzer All-Region

From University of Rochester Athletics

The one-two scoring tandem of junior Sam Borst-Smith and senior Jared Seltzer helped the University of Rochester to a strong season. Both players have been acknowledged for their hard work: they've been elected to the D3hoops.com Men's All-East Region teams.

Borst-Smith was named to the East Region Second Team and Seltzer was chosen to the Third Team. This is the first D3hoops.com All-Region honor for each man. Borst-Smith is a native of San Pedro, CA (Peninsula HS and Lawrenceville [NJ] JHS). Seltzer is a native of Berwyn, PA (Conestoga HS).

Both players were named First Team All-University Athletic Association this year. For Seltzer, it was his first post-season honor. Borst-Smith was a Second Team All-UAA honoree as a sophomore in 2014-15. A total of five UAA players were selected for All-Region honors by D3hoops.com. Rochester was the only team with multiple selections. NYU's Evan Kupferberg was a First Team All-East pick. Will Trawick of Emory was named to the South Region Third Team and Matt Clark of Case Western Reserve was named to the Great Lakes Region Third Team.

Borst-Smith led Rochester in scoring (17.2 ppg.), assists (88), and steals (50). He shot 44.9% from the floor (144-321), 35.4% outside the arc (51-144) and 81.3% at the line (74-91). He added 95 rebounds and five blocked shots.

On February 21, he scored his 1,000th career point and became the 28th player to reach four figures at Rochester. Two weeks before that, he achieved world-wide attention for a dramatic game-ending play. He intentionally missed a free throw with 2.7 seconds left in overtime and Rochester down by two. He got his own rebound and passed to junior Mack Montague who sank a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Rochester a 77-76 victory over the University of Chicago on Super Bowl Sunday. The video received mammoth attention on social media, with more than 1.1 million views.

Seltzer finished second in scoring (16.0 ppg.). He led the team in rebounding (7.7 rpg.). He shot 44.0% from the floor (140-318), 38.3% outside the arc (49-128), and a team-best 85.4% at the foul line (70-82). He added 28 assists, seven blocked shots, and 15 steals.

Both players were named to three All-Tournament teams: Rochester's Chuck Resler Invitational, the UR/Holiday Inn Airport Invitational, and the Wendy's College Classic.

Rochester assembled a nine-game winning streak from January 22 through February 19. The Yellowjackets were ranked #2 in the East Region by the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Committee for all three weeks in February. On February 27, the Yellowjackets hosted an 'unofficial' UAA Championship Game against Emory University (with both teams 10-3 in league play entering the game). Emory won the UAA title. Rochester finished the season 17-8, 10-4 in the UAA.
