Buzzer Beater Lifts Rochester Over Chicago in OT

Mack Montague sank a three-pointer at the overtime buzzer after an intentionally-missed free throw to give Rochester a 77-76 victory over the University of Chicago at the Louis Alexander Palestra.
 
Chicago held a 76-73 lead with six seconds left. The Maroons fouled Rochester's Sam Borst-Smith with 2.7 seconds left to prevent a three-pointer. Borst-Smith made the first shot, pulling Rochester within 76-74. He threw the second one off the front of the rim. It came right back to him and he passed it to Montague in the left corner. Montague's jumper was in the air as the buzzer sounded.
 
The Maroons hit a three-pointer in the final seconds of regulation to force the overtime period. Rochester held a 62-47 lead after a three-pointer from Borst-Smith with 4:21 to play. The Yellowjackets did not make another field goal. Chicago went on an extended 16-2 run, getting within one point on a free throw by Waller Perez with 15.5 seconds left. Tyler Howard scored six points in the burst. Perez had four.
 
Perez made the first free throw, then missed the second. Alex Voss was whistled for a foul that sent Rochester's Jared Seltzer to the foul line with 14.7 seconds remaining. Seltzer made both, putting Rochester up by three, 66-63.
 
At the other end, Howard missed a layup and fouled Seltzer in the battle for the rebound. With six seconds left, Seltzer missed both shots in the two-shot situation. Alex Voss rebounded and threw a long pass upcourt to Jake Fenlon. He sank a three-pointer from in front of his own bench with 1.4 seconds left. Rochester couldn't get a final shot off in regulation.
 
The Yellowjackets remain a game behind Emory University in the University Athletic Association race. Rochester is 14-6 overall, 7-2 UAA. Emory is 15-5, 8-1. Chicago, ranked #21 in this week's media poll, is 14-6, 5-4.
 
Seltzer and Montague led Rochester with 15 points apiece. Borst-Smith scored 12 points. Jacob Wittig and Michael Mangan had nine points each. Wittig had six assists.
 
Howard scored a game-high 22 points for Chicago. Jordan Smith and Voss scored 14 points. He led Chicago on the boards with nine rebounds.
 
Rochester led for much of the first half. A three-pointer by Montague gave Rochester a 25-17 lead with 4:30 left. Chicago ended the half on a 15-4 run – seven points from Howard, four from Nate Brooks. The Maroons led, 32-29, at halftime.
 
Howard went coast-to-coast early in the second half to push Chicago ahead, 37-31. Over the next 10 minutes, Rochester outscored Chicago, 24-4, to build a 55-42 lead with 7:10 left. Borst-Smith and Montague hit two trifectas apiece to lead the way.
