Bears Remain Undefeated With 84-64 Win at Hanover

Sophomore forward Andrew Sanders scored a career-high 20 points to lead four starters in double figures as the Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team posted an 84-64 road win at Hanover College Sunday afternoon in Hanover, Ind.

WashU improved its record to 5-0, while Hanover dropped to 1-3. The Bears are 5-0 for the second-straight season and eighth time under head coach Mark Edwards.

Sophomore guard Kevin Kucera tied a career-best with 16 points, while junior forward Clinton Hooks (15) and senior guard Luke Silverman-Lloyd (12) also scored in double figures.

WashU shot 52.6 percent (30-of-57) from the field in the win, including 66.7 percent (18-fo-27) in the second half. The Bears also tied a season-high with 10 three-pointers in the win.

The Bears started quickly against Hanover opening the game with a 9-2 run, highlighted by a three-pointer by Silverman-Lloyd. The Bears expanded the lead to eight (18-10) after a 7-0 run that forced a Hanover timeout.

WashU went cold from the field going without a bucket for the next 6:04. Kucera ended the drought for the Bears with a three to make it 21-16 with 5:44 left before half.

Sophomore guard Jake Knupp came off the bench for WashU and scored seven of the Bears' final nine points of the half, including a three-pointer wit 25 seconds to give WashU the 32-26 halftime advantage.

WashU's defense limited Hanover to 34.8 percent (8-of-23) shooting in the first half, and the Bears forced 11 turnovers. Kucera led WashU with nine first-half points.

The Bears got the lead into double figures (47-34) three minutes into the second half following a three-point play by Hooks. Sanders followed with his first three-pointer of the season as WashU took a 52-38 lead with 14:48 to play.

Corey Muchmore (14 points) and V.J. Billups (12) scored in double figures for Hanover, which had 18 turnovers in the loss.

WashU travels to Bloomington, Ill., on Saturday, Dec. 5, to take on Nov. 24-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University (3-2, 0-0 CCIW). Game time is set for 7 p.m.
