Brandeis Men's Basketball Tops Emory 67-59 to Make Brian Meehan Program's Winningest Coach

The Brandeis University men's basketball team hosted Emory University Friday evening as they looked to avenge an overtime loss in Atlanta just a week ago. Brandeis topped Emory 67-59 to make head coach Brian Meehan the Judges' all-time winningest coach in school history with 205 program wins. Brandeis is now 7-11 (3-5 in the UAA) and Emory is 14-5 (5-3 in the UAA).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Judges led early, starting the contest up 12-4 in the first eight minutes of play.
  • Brandeis led by as much as 10 in the first half, outscoring the Eagles 27-22.
  • Emory threatened to close the gap throughout the second half, but the Judges held strong, not conceding a lead throughout the the remainder of the game. 
  • With Brandeis up 57-56 with 2:54 to play in regulation, the Judges went on a 10-3 run to finish off the Eagles.

FOR BRANDEIS:

  • Junior Jordan Cooper (Weston, Fla./Sagemont School) had a season high 28 points, finishing a rebound away from a double-double.
  • Cooper has now logged seven 20+ point games this season.
  • He also finished with three steals and an assist on the day. Cooper was 12-14 from the line and 2-4 from beyond the arc after being held to just five shot attempts in the teams' last matchup.
  • Senior Tim Reale (Mason, Ohio/St. Andrew's (R.I.) School) finished with 14 points, 10 of which coming from the free throw line (10-14). Reale also collected six rebounds.
  • Senior Robinson Vilmont (Cambridge, Mass./Wilbraham and Monson Academy) had 12 points on 4-8 from the field in the contest with eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

FOR EMORY:

  • Emory had two players in double digit scoring, led by Jim Gordon's 21 points. 
  • Whit Rapp finished with 11 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds in the contest.
  • UAA-leading scorer, Adam Gigax, was held to just seven points by Brandeis (13 below his season average). Gigax did lead the team in rebounds, however, with eight.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Brandeis shot 42.9% from 3-point range (6-14) as Emory made only nine of their 32 attempts from 3-point (28.1%).
  • The Judges got to the line for 34 shots, making 25 of their attempts (73.5%).
  • Emory only shot 10 free throws in the contest, 39 less than the 49 they took in Atlanta a week ago.

MILESTONES:

  • Head Coach Brian Meehan passes former coach Bob Brannum ('70-'86) with his 205th win at the helm of the Judges. 
  • Coach Meehan is 205-153 in his fourteen years with the Judges. 
  • He has taken four teams to the NCAA tournament and one ECAC Championship.
  • Junior forward Jordan Cooper is just 18 points shy of his 1000th point. 
  • He looks to become the 32nd player in school history to reach the milestone.
