Emory University associate men's basketball coach Chris McHugh has resigned his position to take over the head coaching duties at Washington and Lee University.

McHugh joined the Emory coaching staff in September of 2013 and helped guide the Eagles to an overall record of 80-31, with the win total the program's second highest over a four-year stretch. Emory made four straight trips to the NCAA D-III Tournament, advancing to the Round of 16 three straight years (2014, 2015, 2016) and making an appearance in the 2014 Elite Eight. During his run on the Eagles' staff, McHugh assisted the program to a pair of UAA titles (2015, 2016) as well as two 20-win seasons, including a 22-6 slate in 2014-15 that represented the second-highest win total in school annals. In addition, McHugh was part of two UAA Coaching Staff of the Year honorees.  This past year Emory posted an overall mark of 19-8 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament's Round of 32.

While at Emory, he helped mentor former All-Americans Jake Davis and Alex Foster, and First Team All-University Athletic Association performers Michael Florin, McPherson Moore, Will Trawick and Adam Gigax.

Prior to his arrival at Emory, McHugh served as an assistant coach at Connecticut College (2012-13) and Mount Saint Mary College in New York (2009-10 through 2011-12).

"We are extremely excited for Chris and his opportunity to lead the basketball program at his alma mater," said Emory head coach Jason Zimmerman.  "Chris played a vital role in continuing the growth and success of our program over the last four years. He developed outstanding relationships and demonstrated excellence in many aspects of our program. W & L hired a very good basketball coach, but even a better person."

McHugh returns to Lexington, Virginia, after a stellar career at Washington and Lee where he played from 2005-06 through 2008-09.   A starter in 72 games during his career, McHugh ranked sixth on the Generals' all-time list in three-point field goals.  His final year saw W&L post 16 wins, the program's highest total since 1990.
