Noah Karras Sets Season Mark For 3-Pointers, Maroons Top Brandeis, 82-74

From University of Chicago Athletics

Noah Karras broke the school record for season three-pointers on Friday night while leading the University of Chicago men's basketball team to an 82-74 victory at Brandeis University.

The Maroons improved to 14-9 on the season, including 6-6 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Judges dropped to 7-15 overall and 3-9 in the UAA.

Karras splashed in seven three-pointers on 11 attempts during the contest for a game-high 25 points. With his sixth trey of the evening, the sophomore guard became UChicago's season record holder for threes. The previous best school mark of 71 was established by Jesse Meyer in the 2006-07 season. Karras now has 73 three-pointers on the year.

Early on, the Maroons pumped the ball into the post for Blaine Crawford. The senior forward tallied nine of the team's opening 16 points. On the other side of the court, Brandeis leaned on Jordan Cooper to provide 11 of its first 18 points.

The Judges embarked on a 13-2 streak to take a 10-point lead about midway through the half. The Maroons struck right back with an 11-3 run, featuring a Crawford dunk and back-to-back threes by senior guard Tyler Howard and Karras. UChicago eventually took a slim 38-37 lead into halftime when Karras hit a trey before the buzzer.

Brandeis outshot UChicago in field-goal percentage 63.6 to 48.3. But the scoring prowess of Crawford (14 points) and Karras (11 points), along with 11 Brandeis turnovers, kept things even.

The crucial second half surge occurred after a tie at 44-44. Karras went beyond the arc and nailed three long jumpers in-a-row to help put his team ahead 55-44. UChicago would keep its lead for the rest of the game.

Down the stretch, the closest the Judges could come was five points with 1:36 remaining. The Maroons closed out the contest by going 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the final minute.

Alongside Karras' 25 points, Crawford poured in 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Senior forward Waller Perez and junior forward Collin Barthel registered 12 points each. Howard led the defense with five steals.

UChicago and Brandeis both shot 52 percent from the field and made nine three-pointers each. The Maroons won the rebounding category (30-26) and the turnovers column (12-18).
