When Jake Fenlon poured in 10 three-pointers on Jan. 29, he set a new school record in the process. That record only lasted for one game, however. On Friday night, Noah Karras broke his own teammate's mark with 11 threes and the University of Chicago men's basketball team blasted past Case Western Reserve University 99-73.

The Maroons improved their season record to 12-7 with a 4-4 mark in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Spartans dropped to 5-14 overall and 0-8 in the conference.

The story all night was Karras and his hot shooting hand. The sophomore guard poured in a career-high 39 points that featured an 11-for-14 performance from beyond the arc. Many of his attempts came from 22 to 25 feet away. The 11 treys set new school and UAA records for threes in a game. It was also the most points in a game by a Maroon since Matt Johnson scored a school-record 49 points versus Emory University on Jan. 27, 2012.

UChicago came into the game shorthanded missing four starters from the lineup. As a result, Case owned the size advantage down low as 6-foot-7 T.J. Duckett gave the home side a match-up problem all game. Duckett came fast out of the gate, scoring 11 of his team's opening 14 points, including two thunderous dunks.

But UChicago was able to slow down the big forward a bit after that point and got going on their own end with three-point prowess. Karras nailed one of his deepest threes of the night from straight away to beat CWR's 3-2 zone defense and give his team an 18-15 lead. The next trey came courtesy of junior guard Fenlon at 22-18.

Sophomore forward Ryan Jacobsen received his first career start and responded with a complete effort. He tallied his first double-double of his career with 14 points and a career-high 13 rebounds while playing effective defense in the post. At 28-25, Jacobsen threw down a crowd-pleasing dunk on a fast break. That basket helped kick-start a 14-3 run by the Maroons in which they hit six shots in-a-row, including back-to-back triples from Karras and freshman guard Jordan Baum.

At halftime, UChicago owned a 43-30 lead. Karras had 12 points at the half while Jacobsen contributed 10 points.

In the second half, Karras was flammable from long range. The shooting guard went off for 27 points in 16 minutes, including seven three-pointers. Fenlon skied for a dunk off the base line to push the UChicago lead to 53-38. Five-straight points by freshman forward Sam Sustacek included a basket and-one at 58-38.

A 17-5 run beginning near the midpoint of the second half settled the night's result for good. The second half turned into a slog with the perpetual sound of whistles. A total of 33 fouls were called in the final 20 minutes. UChicago's largest lead was 31 points down the stretch.

The Maroons ended up shooting 56.1 percent from the field and 59.3 percent from three (16-27). The Spartans shot 40.7 percent from the field and 22.2 percent from downtown (6-27). UChicago crashed the boards for a 46-31 rebounding advantage that helped lead to a 20-5 edge in second-chance points.

All five starters scored in double digits. Fenlon posted 12 points, six rebounds and five assists. Sophomore guard Justin Jackson added 11 points and four rebounds, while Baum accounted for 10 points while handing out seven assists.
