Yellowjackets Post Wire-To-Wire Win At CWRU

From University of Rochester Athletics

The University of Rochester men's basketball team pushed its record to 15-1 overall and 4-1 in the UAA with a convincing 80-61 win over Case Western Reserve University on Sunday afternoon at Horsburgh Gymnasium.

The 8th-ranked Yellowjackets had four players in double-figure scoring, including sophomore Ryan Clamage who led all players with career-high 19 points off the bench.  Clamage was 7-10 from the floor, 3-4 from 3-point range and added 6 rebounds and 4 assists.  Joining him in with 10-plus points was classmate Jacob Wittig who had 14 points and six assists and seniors Zack Ayers and Sam Borst-Smith who had 13 and 10 points respectively.

Case Western Reserve (5-11, 0-5 UAA) was led by Colin Zucker who had 15 points and five rebounds while Eric Black added 11 points and five boards.  Two players, Javier Alvarez and Connor Nally each had nine points for the Spartans.

Rochester was able to break open an 8-6 lead using a 13-4 run, getting its margin up to 11 just past the midway point of the opening half.  Three 3-pointers highlighted the spurt, coming from Borst-Smith, Ayers and Mack Montague.  Michael Mangan and Andrew Lundstrom also each provided a lay-up inside during the run.

Ultimately, the Yellowjackets were able to head into halftime with an 11-point lead, sitting up 43-32 on the scoreboard.

The second half began with three straight baskets for UR, with the lead reaching 17 points, just over 90 seconds into the final period.

Case tried to stay in the contest, scoring 13 of the next 19 points to trim the lead back to single digits, trailing by nine at 54-45 with under 14 minutes on the clock, sparked by a couple of 3-pointers from Michael Hollis and Zucker.

Then Spartans then went cold, not making a field goal for nearly eight minutes, allowing Rochester to embark on a 15-2 run which built the lead up to 22 points with under seven minutes to play.  UR was able to generate offense with set plays opening up lanes and cutting the basket along the baseline.  Six different players scored during the run for the 'Jackets.

Rochester has now won four straight against CWRU and leads the all-time series between the schools 41-10.
