Sam Borst-Smith, Mack Montague of Rochester Among D3hoops.com Honorees

The University of Rochester pulled down the lion's share of All-Region accolades from D3hoops.com among the schools in the University Athletic Association. 

Senior Sam Borst-Smith was named the East Region Player of the Year and First Team All-East. Classmate Mack Montague was named Second Team All-East. Head coach Luke Flockerzi was chosen as the Regional Coach of the Year.

Three UAA players from other institutions were honored. Adam Gigax of Emory University was named First Team All-South Region. Jack Serbin of Carnegie Mellon University was named Second Team All-Great Lakes Region, and Andrew Sanders of Washington University was named Second Team All-Central Region.

Rochester finished the regular season with a 21-4 record. The Yellowjackets accepted a Pool C (at-large) bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs. Rochester won three straight playoff games: 89-66 over Albertus Magnus College and 82-60 against Union College. Both of those games were played in the Palestra. Last weekend, Rochester defeated Marietta College of Ohio, 85-80. Marietta was ranked #7 nationally. The Yellowjackets lost, 91-87, to top-ranked Whitman College of Washington in the Elite 8 round. Rochester's final record was 24-5.

Borst-Smith and Montague were both named First Team All-UAA at the end of the regular season. A week ago, Borst-Smith was named to the ECAC North All-Star Team and Flockerzi was chosen as Coach of the Year.

In 2016-17, Borst-Smith led Rochester in scoring (16.3 ppg.), shooting 49.8% from the floor, 41.4% outside the arc, and 76.5% from the foul line. He averaged 5.5 rebounds per game, compiled 99 assists (against 39 steals), blocked 16 shots, and had a single-season record 76 steals.

Montague was second in scoring at 15.7 ppg. He connected on 43.1% of his overall shots, 37.8% of his three-point tries, and shot 76.9% at the foul line. He averaged 4.1 rpg., had 68 assists, three blocked shots, and 29 steals. On January 20, he became the 29th Rochester men's player to top the 1,000 point mark. He finished his career with 1,191 points. He sank 242 career three-pointers which broke the school record of 235 set by Kyle Meeker (1990-94). His 90 three-point goals made this season are the second highest in a single season. Robert Dominiak (2004-08) holds the single-season mark of 93, set in 2007-08.

Flockerzi led the Yellowjackets to their fifth-highest win total in 116 years of men's basketball. Rochester opened the year at 13-0 and rose as high as number three in the D3hoops.com poll. The Yellowjackets entered the NCAA tournament ranked #13. Rochester's sectional grouping featured four teams that were ranked number one regionally heading into the NCAA tourmament: East (Rochester), Great Lakes (Marietta), South (Hardin-Simmons), and West (Whitman).

In seven years on the UR sidelines, Flockerzi has led Rochester to a pair of UAA titles and three appearances in the NCAA tournament. His career record is 122-62 at Rochester, 152-108 overall in 10 years as a head coach.
