Rochester Tops Hobart With Key 3-Point Shooting

The University of Rochester men's basketball team used some hot shooting from long range, sinking 12 three pointers in a 73-59 victory over visiting Hobart College on Tuesday evening at the Louis Alexander Palestra. 

Rochester (4-0) was led by seniors Mack Montague and Sam Borst-Smith on the night, with the two guards scoring 22 and 21 points respectively.  Montague made four treys and had five assists while Borst-Smith sank five from long range and added a career high 13 rebounds for his first career double-double.  The loss drops Hobart to 1-2 on the young season.

Jacob Wittig also got in on the scoring, chipping in 11 points, including three 3-pointers while senior Zack Ayers was 3-3 from the floor and recorded six points and seven rebounds.  Overall, all nine players that entered the game for Rochester scored.

The Yellowjackets led entire game after and were only tied once, coming at 2-2 early in the contest.

The first half was pretty evenly matched, as Rochester would head to the break with a four point lead at 28-24.  Neither team held on to the ball well in the opening 20 minutes, with 18 total turnovers combined between the teams, 10 coming on the Hobart side.  Both squads would settle down in the second half, committing only six turnovers total.

Over a five and half minute span early in the second half, Rochester would embark on a 14-3 run to build a 13 point lead, going up 42-29.  The 'Jackets would shoot well in the stretch, hitting 5-of-9 shots while the Statesmen struggled, sinking just 1-of-8 from the floor. 

Visiting Hobart was able to claw back within seven with a little under six minutes on the clock, coming on the heels of a 9-1 spurt over two and half minutes.  Sam Allen, the Statesmen's' leading scorer on the night had six points in the run while Pete Drescher added a three pointer which made the score 56-49 UR with 5:42 left.  Allen finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds while Drescher added 11 points and nine boards.

Rochester would answer right back, making three straight from behind the arc, one by Montague and two more by Wittig to quickly regain a 16-point lead.  From there, the Yellowjackets would cruise the rest of the way, earning the 14 point victory.
