Rochester's Quick Start Leads to Win Over NYU

The University of Rochester scored 14 of the game's first 16 points enroute to a 96-71 victory over New York University at the Louis Alexander Palestra on Friday night.
 
With the win, Rochester improves to 16-1 overall, 5-1 in the University Athletic Association. Rochester is one game behind Washington University (MO) (6-0). Emory University is third (4-2). NYU lost its fourth in a row and eighth in the past nine games. The Violets are 6-10 overall, 1-5 in the UAA.
 
Mack Montague led Rochester with 20 points. He hit eight of 13 floor shots. Sam Borst-Smith had 16 points, five rebounds, four assists, one blocked shot, and four steals. Andrew Lundstrom contributed 14 points in 13 minutes off the bench. He made five of six from the floor.
 
Jack Heller paced NYU with 17 points, including three three-pointers. All three came from NBA range. Ross Udine had 12 points, Joshua Bunch scored 11, and Joe Timmes had 10 points and eight rebounds.
 
Rochester shot 52% from the floor in the first half (15-29), made three of eight from three-point range, and nine of 15 at the foul line. In the second half, the Yellowjackets were 15 of 25 from the field, four of eight outside the arc, and 20 of 26 at the line. 
 
NYU sank seven of 12 from outside the arc in the second half and 11 of 26 (42%) for the game. Bunch, Timmes, Udine, and Jimmy Martinelli each made two treys apiece.
 
The Violets chopped away at the early Rochester lead. Heller's initial three-pointer from let wing pulled NYU within 26-18. Rochester went on a 12-3 run to build a 38-21 lead. Lundstrom and Alexander Gamble scored four points apiece in the burst. Gamble hit a trey from the left corner and later made one of two from the line. He finished with eight points. Rochester had seven players score seven or more. UR led, 42-30, at half time.

Rochester opened the second half with a 12-2 burst: a reverse layup by Tucker Knox, a driving layup by Montague, a followup by Jacob Wittig, two free throws from Montague, a steal and layup by Borst-Smith, and a backdoor layup by Montague.
