Kevin Kucera Has Career Night as Washington University Wins at DePauw

Junior guard Kevin Kucera scored a career-high 27 points to lead the No. 20-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team to an 84-77 win at DePauw University Saturday in Greencastle, Ind.

WashU improved to 2-0 with the win, while DePauw dropped to 0-2.

Kucera was 7-of-11 from the field and 12-of-14 from the free-throw line. He also added six rebounds and four assists in the win. Junior guard Jake Knupp and junior forward Andrew Sanders added 13 points each, while junior forward Matt Highsmith chipped in with 12 points.

WashU shot 45.6 percent (26-of-57) from the field, and hit 28-of-40 from the free-throw line. The Bears committed a season-low four turnovers and outrebounded DePauw 37-28.

Kucera had nine points in the first half as the Bears jumped out to a 36-31 lead. WashU held a four-point advantage with less than six minutes left in the half when the Bears scored five-straight to extend the lead to nine with 3:40 to play.

DePauw trimmed the advantage to two (41-39) with 17:39 to play, but Kucera followed with two buckets and Sanders added a lay-up to make it 47-39. Kucera gave WashU its largest lead of the game (77-67) with 2:38 to play.

Luke Lattner led DePauw with 22 points, while Jack VandeMerkt (16 points) and Ethan Jarrett (12) also scored in double figures. The Tigers hit 10 threes in the loss.

WashU plays its 2016-17 home opener on Wednesday, Nov. 23, against Hanover University. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at the WU Field House.
