Rochester Graduate Sam Borst-Smith to Play Professional Basketball in Germany

As a member of the men's basketball team at the University of Rochester, Sam Borst-Smith played in a variety of locales: New York, Atlanta, Chicago, St. Louis, Boston, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland in conference play; Marietta, Ohio and Salem, Virginia in post-season.
 
The next step in his basketball odyssey is taking him overseas – to Dusseldorf, Germany where he will begin his professional career.
 
Borst-Smith has just signed a professional contract with the ART Giants Dusseldorf, a member of the German professional league. The team will begin training shortly to prepare for the 2017-18 season. The home opener is scheduled for September 22 against BG Kamp-Lintfort.
 
As a senior at Rochester, Borst-Smith acquired awards as rapidly as he accumulated statistics. He was named to three All-America teams (First Team by DIIINews, Second Team by D3hoops.com, Third Team by the NABC). He was a finalist for the Josten's Trophy, was on the Bevo Francis Award watch list, and played in the Reese's/NABC Division III All-Star Game in Salem, VA. He was named the UAA Men's Player of the Year and First Team All-UAA, D3hoops.com East Region Player of the Year, First Team All-Region by D3hoops.com and the NABC.
 
He averaged a team-high 16.3 ppg., grabbed 5.5 rpg., had 99 assists, and 76 steals. He shot 49.8% from the floor, 41.4% outside the arc, and 76.5% from the line. He finished first in steals for a season (76) and a career (212). His 1,497 points placed him seventh in scoring.
