From Carnegie Mellon University Athletics

A hot start to the first half led the Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team to a 72-58 victory at home against Brandeis University on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Tartans move to 5-15 and 1-8 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Judges have an equal record at 5-15 and 1-8.

Four Tartans scored in double figures with sophomore Trent Suddeth (Winter Park, Fla. / Trinity Prep) leading the way with 15 points. The sophomore also recorded his second career double-double by pulling down 10 rebounds. Sophomores Colin McNeil (Ringoes, N.J. / Hunterdon Central Regional) and Zach Howarth (Freehold, N.J. / St. John Vianney) each scored 11 points while senior Ryan Maha (West Mifflin, Pa. / West Mifflin) put in 10 points in his second game back off an injury.

Junior Seth Henry (Fulton, Md. / Reservoir) scored the first basket of the game and the Tartans went on a 7-0 run that closed at 20-4 after a fast break layup by Howarth. During the run, the Tartans made 8-of-9 from the field and Maha bookended four straight from beyond the arc.

The Tartans led by double digits the rest of the half and even pushed the lead to 21 twice, the second time on a three-pointer by sophomore Cooper Williams (Meriden, N.H. / Kimball Union Academy) with 2:12 to play in the half.

Brandeis opened the second period with an 11-2 run to pull within 12 points, 47-35. The teams traded baskets before the Judges made it just an 11-point lead for the home team with 10:15 to play. The Tartans then went on an 11-0 run, pushing the lead back to 22 with 5:52 remaining.

The Tartans shot 48.3 percent for the game while holding the Judges to 35.6 percent. The Tartans also dished out 14 assists on their 29 made baskets with McNeil leading the way with five.
