Three-Point Attack Sparks Emory To Win Over Guilford

Three-Point Attack Sparks Emory To Win Over Guilford

From Emory University Athletics

Freshman Romin Williams came off the bench to score a game-high tying 16 points in helping the Emory men's basketball team to a Saturday afternoon win at home over Guilford College. The Eagles won their second straight game and raised their record to 6-2 following an 84-58 decision over the Quakers who slipped to 4-4.

Willams ended the contest sinking six-of-14 from the floor, including four treys, en route to his fifth straight and seventh double-figure scoring performance of the season.  Williams was part of an impressive three-point shooting display that Emory employed in registering their fourth home win in as many outings.  The Eagles, who led from start to finish, knocked down a season-high 15 triples, tying the program's fourth-highest game total. Six different players hit at least one shot from beyond the arc including freshman Matt Davet who totaled 12 points on the strength of four-of-six shooting from distance. The senior duo of Adam Gigax and Christopher Avant each totaled 14 points, with Gigax going five-of-six from the field, three-of-four from three-point range, and Avant pulling down a team-leading nine rebounds. Senior Whit Rapp returned to the lineup after missing the last six games and doled out a game-high eight assists in 21 minutes of action.

The Eagles were successful on 46.8 percent (29-62) of their field goal opportunities, including 15-of-37 from three-point range. Defensively, Emory held Guilford to 35.4 percent (23-65) from the floor, the second-lowest opponent mark of the season, including 16.7 percent (4-24) from three-point range. Each team finished with 42 rebounds.

The outcome was largely decided over a 6:30 stretch in the first half that saw Emory go on a dominating 20-0 run, with 18 points coming on six three-point field goals, that stretched a 22-20 lead into a 42-20 cushion with 3:06 left in the stanza. Emory made the most of nine straight Guilford field goal misfires in that run and saw five different players connect from downtown, including junior Gebereal Baitey who nailed a pair. The Eagles shot 51.6 percent (16-31) from the floor during the opening 20 minutes and were successful on 10 treys in 23 tries in taking a 44-23 lead into the break.

Guilford closed to within 19 points with 16:29 left in the game, but Emory responded with 10 unanswered points, the final six via two three-pointers by Davet, to take its biggest lead of the game, 60-31, with 13:19 remaining.
