Recently Retired NYU Head Coach Joe Nesci Receives MBWA Distinguished Service Award

From NYU Athletics

Former New York University men's basketball Head Coach Joe Nesci will be presented with the Distinguished Service Award from the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) at the 85th All-Met Haggerty Awards Dinner on Wednesday, April 25, at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown, NY.

Nesci, who announced his retirement last month, has served as the Head Coach of men's basketball at NYU since the middle of the 1988-89 season. He has coached more games (782) and recorded more victories (512) than anyone else in program history.

During his tenure, Nesci guided the Violets to 21 postseason appearances over 30 seasons, including seven straight NCAA Tournament appearances (1992-98) and a berth in the NCAA Division III National Championship Game in 1994. His teams posted 27 winning seasons, eight with at least 20 wins, and his overall record at NYU was 512-270 (.654 winning pct).

This season, he led the Violets to a 10-14 record and saw three team members receive All-University Athletic Association (UAA) accolades.

Selected Coach of the Year four times by the MBWA and three times by the UAA, Nesci began his career at Xavier High School in Manhattan before joining the staff at NYU.

A native of Brooklyn, NY, who lives with his wife, Jane, on Staten Island, NY, Nesci is a 1979 graduate of Brooklyn College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in health. He is the proud father of three children --- Alyssa, Andrew and Amanda (all NYU grads) --- and a just-as-proud grandfather of Justin.
