In a fitting homecoming for Jake Fenlon, the senior guard led the way for the University of Chicago men's basketball team with 24 points in the Maroons' 72-65 league upset over No. 22 Rochester Sunday.
The Maroons (8-10, 4-3 University Athletic Association) captured their first win of the season over a ranked opponent and led the Yellowjackets (13-5, 4-3) the entire 40 minutes.
Fenlon, a product of Rochester's McQuaid Jesuit High School, started off the contest with the first of his six 3-pointers at the 17:33 mark that kickstarted a 15-0 Maroons run. Noah Karras followed his teammate with back-to-back jumpers, Fenlon drained another 3 and Ryan Jacobsen and Jordan Baum added layups, as UChicago held Rochester scoreless until 13 minutes to go in the half.
The Yellowkjackets would make a run, however, battling back to cut the lead to just five, 32-27, at the break.
Rochester scored the first four points of the second half to get as close as one, 32-31, but senior Collin Barthel answered with a jumper and Fenlon, already UChicago's career 3-point leader, stymied the run with two more triples to push the lead back to six, 37-31.
UChicago would lead by as many as 12 (51-39) midway through the second half via another Fenlon 3, and the closest Rochester would come down the stretch was five, before the Maroons sealed the big road win at the free-throw line.
Fenlon finished 6-of-16 from the floor – all 3s – and added three assists to lead UChicago, and Barthel recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Karras finished with nine points, Jake Berhorst chipped in eight off the bench and Jacobsen pulled down 10 rebounds, including six offensive.
The Maroons finished 39.1 percent (25-of-64) from the floor, just better than Rochester's 36.7 percent (22-of-60) and UChicago made nine 3s (9-of-25) compared to just four (4-of-20) for the hosts.
UChicago outrebounded the Yellowjackets, 42-35.
Ryan Clamage led Rochester with 16 points and Andrew Lundstrom added 13 in the loss.
