Washington University Sets Program Record in 104-70 UAA Road Win

The No. 3-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team's 104-70 victory over Carnegie Mellon University set a new school record for the most consecutive wins in which the Bears reached triple figures in scoring during Sunday's University Athletic Association (UAA) contest in Pittsburgh.

WashU has won six-straight games and is 14-2 and 5-0 in the UAA, while Carnegie Mellon has lost seven-straight games and is 4-12 and 0-5 in the UAA. The Bears increased their road UAA winning streak to 12-consecutive contests dating back to 2015-16.

The Bears forced a season-high 27 turnovers and set a single-game school record with 21 steals. WashU finished ahead of Carnegie Mellon in several categories including field goal percentage (50.6 – 47.3), points in the paint (58-32), points off of turnovers (33-16), second chance points (19-9), bench points (50-39) and rebounds (41-33).

Four players reached double figure scoring for WashU led by freshman Jack Nolan's 16, while seniors Andrew Sanders (15), David Schmelter (15) and Jake Knupp (14) also exceeded 10 points.

Senior Kevin Kucera moved into fourth place all-time in assists as he totaled six on the night, pushing his career total to 430.

WashU built a steady lead from early on as Knupp scored the initial basket of the game. The Bears flourished midway through the first half and utilized an 8-0 run to build a double-digit lead on a dunk by Schmelter on the assist from Kucera. WashU led 50-37 at the half.

The Bears managed 12 first half offensive rebounds which led to a 10-2 scoring advantage on second-chance points. WashU also totaled 28 points in the paint compared to Carnegie Mellon's 14. Nolan led all scorers with 12 points off the bench, making all four threes.

Sanders also reached double figures in the first half with 11 points to add to his streak of 26-straight games with 10 or more points. Schmelter also totaled 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting including two dunks.

The Bears lead exceeded 40 points in the second half following a three-pointer by sophomore guard Matt Nester and two successful free-throws by sophomore forward DeVaughn Rucker which made the score 85-43.

Carnegie Mellon had two players reach double figures in scoring, Zach Howarth (16) and Zach Watson (15).

WashU continues its four-game road trip on Friday, January 26, at No. 25-ranked University of Rochester. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. (ET) at the Palestra.
