The No. 2-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team picked its 20th win of the season and remained unbeaten in conference play with a 99-72 victory at New York University Sunday at Hunter College in Manhattan, N.Y.
WashU has won 12-straight games and is 20-2 and 11-0 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while New York dropped to 10-11 and 3-8 in the UAA. The win gave head coach Mark Edwards his 18th 20-win season in 37 years, including the 10th in the last 12 years.
Senior forward Andrew Sanders led the Bears in scoring for the second-straight contest with 23 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while senior guard Jake Knupp added 14 points and four steals. Senior forward Matt Highsmith added 10 points on a pair of treys. WashU shot 52.2 percent (36-of-69) from the field and hit 23-of-30 from the foul line.
WashU opened the game hitting five of its first six shots from the field and led 12-0 in the opening 3:46 of the game. A 6-0 run by the Bears extended the lead to 26-8 with 11:23 left and forced a second NYU timeout. Knupp and Sanders had eight points each in the opening nine minutes of play.
Junior forward Marcus Meyer continued his solid play off the bench with five-straight points to push the lead to 33-12 with less than nine minutes before half. Meyer finished the game with a season-high seven points for the second-straight contest.
WashU took a 52-34 lead to the half after shooting 63.6 percent (21-of-33) from the field and 9-of-11 from the free-throw line. The Bears had 10 of 14 student-athletes score in the opening half, led by Sanders' 10 points and three assists. WashU's bench scored 26 points in the opening half.
New York scored the first six points of the second half to get the lead down to 12 (52-40), but the Bears answered with eight-straight point to get the 18-point advantage back.
Highsmith drilled a three-pointer from the wing on an assist from Sanders with 10:36 to play to get the lead back to 25 (76-51).
Ethan Feldman led New York with 19 points, while Ross Udine had 15 points and eight assists in his final home game with the Violets.
