Daniel Sconzo and John Cramerus of the New York University men's fencing team represented the Violets on day one of the 2015 NCAA Fencing Championships, hosted by Ohio State University from Thursday-Sunday, March 19-22, in Columbus, OH.

Cramerus went 6-9 after the first three rounds of epee competition and is in 17th place out of 24 fencers heading into the fourth and fifth rounds on Friday morning.

The sophomore defeated Nicolas Simko (22nd, Harvard University) 5-4, Jake Raynis (10th, University of Pennsylvania) 5-2, Zsombor Garzo (Eighth, Penn) 5-3, Sean White (21st, St. John's University) 5-3, Garrett McGrathe (20th, University of Notre Dame) 5-4, and Nicholas Hanahan (24th, Notre Dame) 5-4.

"John is fencing really well right now," said NYU Head Coach Steve Mormando. "He had a few close wins at 5-4 that have put him in pretty good shape heading into tomorrow."

Sconzo posted a 4-11 foil record after the first three rounds and is in 20th place out of 24 fencers heading into rounds four and five, which will begin at 9:00 am on Friday.

The freshman defeated Han Kaiser (24th, Wayne State University), Virgile Colineau (11th, Notre Dame) 5-2, Andrew Holmes (22nd, Sacred Heart University) 5-1, and Harrison Bergman (Second, Columbia University) 5-4.

"Dan had a lot of close bouts today, as well," continued Mormando. "There were a few that were tied at 4-4 that came down to the final touch, but just didn't go his way. We're looking forward to tomorrow to see if he can make up some gournd."

Both fencers will be in action for the fourth and fifth rounds on Friday morning. Once the first five rounds are complete, the top four finishers in each weapon will advance to the semifinals at 1:30 pm, with the winners of those matches advancing to their respective championship bouts.
