Hans Engel of the New York University men's fencing team was
named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Rookie of the
Week on Wednesday, January 28.
Engel was the Violets' top performer at the NYU
Invitational on Sunday, January 25. The rookie posted an 11-3
record in epee against some of the top fencing programs in the
country. Engel defeated all three of his opponent from #3 Ohio
State University, and went 2-1 against fencers from #2 University
of Notre Dame, #5 St. John's University and Yale University. Engle
also won both of his bouts vs. Northwestern University.
Engel sports a 21-9 overall record this season, tied for the team
lead in victories.
This is the first ECAC honor of the freshman's career, though he
has already captured two University Athletic Association (UAA)
weekly awards.
