NYU Fencing Duo Completes Competition at NCAA Championships

From NYU Athletics

Daniel Sconzo and John Cramerus of the New York University men's fencing team have completed competition at the 2015 NCAA Championships, which are being hosted by Ohio State University from Thursday-Sunday, March 19-22, in Columbus, OH.

After the two days of men's competition, Sconzo compiled a 7-16 record in foil and finished in 20th place out of 24 competitors.

On Friday, the freshman from Merrick, NY, defeated Maximilian Chastanet (eighth, Ohio State) 5-3, Michele Caporizzi (19th, St. John's University) 5-2 and Brian Wang (23rd, Yale University) 5-4.

Cramerus finished 20th in epee, earning nine wins in 23 bouts.

The sophomore out of Houston, TX, picked up three wins on Friday, defeating Alex House (11th, Princeton University) 5-4, Dean Ischiropoulos (18th, Duke University) 5-1 and Kristopher White (24th, Sacred Heart University) 5-1.

"Both fencers performed extremely well against some very tough competition," said NYU Head Coach Steve Mormando. "They were very close in a few bouts which they lost, otherwise either one could have been an All-American. As it is, their performance has us as the top Division III school in the competition right now."

The Violets are currently in 16th place in the 20-team competition. Team standings will not be final until the end of the day on Sunday, as it is a combined men's/women's competition. NYU has no female representatives at the NCAAs, but the women will compete on Saturday and Sunday.

Host Ohio State is currenlty in first place.
