From NYU Athletics
The New York University men's fencing team competed at the U.S.
Collegiate Squad Championships at Drew University in Madison, NJ,
on Sunday, February 22.
The Violets' foil team of Zane
Haney, Daniel Sconzo, Philip
Shin, and Jack Zheng won the silver
medal.
In the first round, the squad defeated their NYU
teammates Weija Chen, David
Popkin,Jason Yao, and Yash
Srivastav by a score of 45-35.
In the semifinals, the Violets defeated their UAA (University
Athletic Association) rivals Brandeis University by a score of
45-44.
Then in the finals, NYU was bested by top-seeded University of
Pennsylvania by a score of 45-32.
"I'm very proud of the way we fenced," said Head
Coach Steve Mormando. "The team kept fighting and
gave their all. I'm very proud of the result."
OTHER
HIGHLIGHTS:
- The Violets' epee team of Evan
Accardi, John Cramerus, Hans
Engel, and Malcolm Lewisfinished in fourth
place. The squad defeated host Drew in the first round, but fell to
Princeton University in the semifinals.
- NYU's sabre team of Quinten
Burgunder, Josiah Teng, Stephan
Teng, and Jerry Xu also finished fourth.
The Violets defeated Scared Heart University in the opening round
before losing a close decision to UPenn 45-42.
