The New York University men's fencing team opened its 2016-17 dual-meet season by dropping a 14-13 decision to Columbia University on Tuesday, November 22. The competition was held at the Rosenthal Pavilion in NYU's Kimmel Center in Manhattan.

The Violets won two of three weapons from the two-time defending NCAA National Champions, who are now 7-0 this season. NYU was victorious in sabre (5-4) and foil (5-4), but lost in epee (6-3).

"We were right there with the two-time defending National Champions until the very end and just couldn't get the one more win we needed," said NYU Head Coach Steve Mormando. "We have a very strong squad this season and it certainly showed tonight."

Senior captain Quinten Burgunder and sophomore Grant Williams each won two of their three sabre bouts for the Violets.

In foil, junior captain Yash Srivastav won both of his bouts, while junior Philip Shin won two of three.

Freshman Will Zhang recorded two of NYU's three epee victories.

"It was an exciting event in an incredible venue," Mormando explained. "A victory would have made it even better, but I am extremely proud of how we battled tonight."
