NYU Sweeps Historical Meet

From NYU Athletics

The New York University men's fencing team defeated all three of its opponents at Columbia University's Historical Meet on Wednesday, February 15, in Manhattan.

The Violets began the evening with a big 14-13 victory over two-time defending NCAA champion Columbia, and followed that with victories over Vassar College (21-6) and Sacred Heart University (19-8).

Leading the way for the Violets was senior Quinten Burgunder, who went 7-1 in sabre on the evening. The Chatham, NJ, native went 2-1 against Columbia, 2-0 against Vassar, and 3-0 against Sacred Heart.

"This was a fantastic result for our team," said Head Coach Steve Mormando. "We won all three matches and defeated the two-time defending NCAA Champions. This was especially rewarding since we had suffered a close loss to them earlier in the season (14-13 on November 2)."

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:

- Mickey Bak and Grant Williams also performed well in sabre. The sophomores went 6-2 and 5-2, respectively, during the meet.

- Freshman Will Zhang and junior Hans Engel went 6-3 and 5-2, respectively, in epee.

- Juniors Philip Shin and Daniel Sconzo finished with identical 4-2 records in foil.

- Freshman Matt Chen went a perfect 3-0 in sabre.

- Junior Yash Srivastav and freshman Gabriel Mejia-Ruiz each finished with perfect 2-0 records in foil.
