From NYU Athletics

Several members of the New York University men's fencing team had strong performances at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships, which were held at Yale University in New Haven, CT, on Sunday, March 12.

The Violets' best individual performance of the day was produced by sophomore Grant Williams, who finished fourth in sabre. He, along with sophomore Mickey Bak and senior captain Quinten Burgunder, all qualified for the 12-man final round in the weapon. Williams won seven bouts, while Bak and Burgunder each won four to finish eighth and ninth, respectively.

NYU also fared well in foil, as three Violet fencers reached the 11-man final round. Junior Philip Shin went 5-5 to secure sixth place. Freshman Sean Grant won four bouts and sophomore Kyle Welch had three wins to place 10th and 11th, respectively.

None of the Violets advanced to the final round in epee, with junior Hans Engel and freshman Alexandre Crepeaux taking 15th and 16th place, respectively.

There was no team scoring at the event, in which teams hope to qualify their fencers for the NCAA National Championships, which are being held in Indianapolis, IN, on Thursday-Sunday, March 23-26.

According to NYU Head Coach Steve Mormando, five of his fencers have qualified: Williams, Burgunder, Shin, Grant, and Engel, while Bak will be an alternate. In addition, two members of the women's team, Oliwia Szumilo and Anastasiya Moravyeva, while Jacqueline Tubbs is an alternate.

"This is one of the great showings we've had in years," Mormando explained. "We have the 12th-most qualifiers of any team in the nation."

The NCAA Championships, which combine both men and women's team scores for the overall point competition, consists of teams from all NCAA divisions.
